George Campus

22/09/2011

Third year Marketing students at NMMU George have again impressed with their innovative advertising applications developed for the annual Advertising Showcase. It offered students an excellent opportunity to put their creative talents and insights gleaned during their studies into practice, while also contributing to the marketing efforts of a deserving cause – Cansa.

This year’s brief to the 3rd year students studying towards the National Diploma: Marketing at George campus was to create various creative advertising applications for Cansa. This included developing advertisements for application in print media, outdoor media (billboard) or a social media page, and a 90 second marketing video. Creating awareness for Cansa’s fundraising activities such as the Shavathon, High Heel Race and the Relay for Life had to be portrayed.

This project is an example of the kind of practical assignments that prospective students who are interested in enrolling for the National Diploma: Marketing at NMMU George can expect to be exposed to says Adele Potgieter, lecturer in the School of Business and Social Sciences at Saasveld. “The class really excelled this year. The project not only teaches students the basics about advertising mediums. They also learn some valuable lessons on how to work in an environment with different opinions and viewpoints, stressful situations and strict deadlines. I firmly believe that students are better prepared for real life challenges and working conditions after completing this project”, she enthuses.

Three teams competed this year under the banner of their “own” advertising companies - Media Revolution, Zeenith and Inkanyezi Media. Inkanyezi Media was acknowledged for developing the Best Print Advertisement for their portrayal of the Cansa High Heel Race. Media Revolution took the honours in the Best Billboard and Video category for their portrayal of the Cansa Shavathon, while Zeenith was announced the overall winner by the panel of five independent judges for consistently achieving high scores in all the categories.

Petro Heunis, Community Mobiliser from the Cansa George branch and one of the judges congratulated the 3rd year students for the hours of hard work and dedication they put into delivering the message of Cansa. “Projects like these assist us at Cansa in education the general public about different aspects of Cansa’s work. We will definitely be making use of the material produced during the 2011 NMMU George Advertising Showcase. Thank you to NMMU and lecturer, Mrs Potgieter for encouraging the students to use their creativity for a good cause”, she said.
